Weigh the evidence of legend, psychology and the environment. The exhibition includes a number of important scientific findings but remains user friendly and jargon free. "We want to broaden people's experience of this type of environment," says Adrian. "It is not just a monster exhibition. It tells people about Loch Ness and also about Scotland and the ecology of a Scottish loch. While the scientific discoveries are themselves fascinating, they also act as evidence in the great monster legend.

"Visitors to Loch Ness are invited to weigh up the available information & research results, the many eye witness accounts and the facts and figures on the sheer size of the loch - including the amazing fact that it holds more fresh water than the whole of England and Wales put together - and make up their own minds on the matter".

This is everything about Loch Ness that you don't see by looking!

The "John Murray" and later "Ecos", ranged over the dark, 230 metre depths. Filming, coring, sampling and monitoring from these small vessels, using specially adapted equipment, reveals very small things through the microscope and huge processes by sonar, vast time scales and a whole underwater world. A mixture of special effects and genuine equipment interprets this dynamic world, an environment that lies hidden from a visitor driving by the seemingly gentle surface of Loch Ness.

The Loch Ness Time Capsule

"There are 10,000 years of history recorded in the sediment of the loch bed," explains naturalist Adrian Shine, "we can measure the impacts both of nature and of man. Floods and volcanoes leave distinct layers and so does industry. Radioactive isotopes record nuclear testing and the disaster of Chernobyl. These sediments are a barometer of cause and effect".

Despite the environmental results of the industrial revolution , Adrian is confident pollution is now reducing - that too is written in the layers of the loch. "The peak for carbon particles was in the 1970's," he says. "Pollution is declining because of increasing environmental awareness. This shows we can do something about the environment if we try".

The loch is a fascinating and beautiful place. The Loch Ness Exhibition pays tribute to that sense of wonderment as well as revealing some of the many secrets hidden in it's dark depths.
